Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide (PHPA) Manufacturer

Water-Based Drilling Fluid Polymer Guide

Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide (PHPA) Manufacturer

A practical guide to PHPA for shale inhibition, cuttings encapsulation, wellbore stability, rheology control and water-based drilling mud systems.

Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide, commonly known as PHPA, is one of the most widely recognized polymer additives used in water-based drilling fluids. It is especially important in shale-sensitive formations where hydration, dispersion and cuttings breakdown can create instability, solids-loading problems and poor hole cleaning. For international drilling contractors and mud-service companies, selecting the right PHPA manufacturer means evaluating more than product name or price. The supplier should understand shale inhibition, polymer hydration, salinity compatibility, rheology and field performance.

Puyang Jinxiang Chemical supplies بولي أكريلاميد متحلل جزئيًا (PHPA) for water-based drilling-fluid systems. The product is positioned for shale inhibition, borehole stabilization, cuttings encapsulation, viscosity support and filtration control. What Is PHPA?

PHPA is a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide polymer used in water-based drilling mud. Its polymer chains can adsorb on clay and shale surfaces, helping reduce dispersion and limiting direct interaction between reactive formations and the water phase. This makes PHPA particularly useful in formations where shale swelling, sloughing or cuttings degradation can increase mud solids and destabilize the borehole.

PHPA for Shale Inhibition

Shale inhibition is one of the main reasons PHPA is selected in drilling-fluid systems. The polymer helps coat and encapsulate drilled cuttings, reducing their tendency to disperse into fine solids. Better cuttings integrity can improve solids-control efficiency and help maintain a cleaner circulating system.

PHPA is often used with Potassium Chloride (KCl) in inhibitive water-based mud systems. KCl supports ionic inhibition, while PHPA contributes polymer encapsulation and surface protection. In many shale-sensitive wells, the combination is more effective than relying on one mechanism alone.

PHPA vs K-PAM

PHPA and كي-بام are both associated with shale inhibition, but they should not be treated as identical products. PHPA is widely used for cuttings encapsulation, shale inhibition and rheological support. K-PAM is a potassium-containing polymer commonly selected for clay swelling control and inhibition in freshwater or saline water-based systems. Laboratory testing helps determine whether one product or a combined approach is more appropriate for the target formation.

Rheology and Cuttings Transport

In addition to inhibition, PHPA can influence rheology and carrying capacity. A well-designed polymer system should help transport cuttings without creating excessive viscosity. This is why PHPA should be evaluated together with the rest of the mud program, including viscosifiers such as صمغ الزانثان, filtration-control additives and salts.

Filtration and Wellbore Stability

PHPA can contribute to overall filtration performance and wellbore stability, but it is not usually the only filtration-control additive in a complete system. Depending on the mud design, PHPA may be combined with PAC, CMC, starch or lignite-based fluid-loss additives. The key is to balance inhibition, rheology and filtration rather than maximizing one property in isolation.

PHPA performance should be evaluated within the complete mud system under realistic salinity, temperature and solids conditions.

How Should PHPA Be Tested?

For drilling applications, PHPA should be tested in the actual or representative mud formulation. Useful evaluation points include polymer hydration, rheology, cuttings encapsulation, shale recovery, dispersion, salinity compatibility, filtration behavior and properties after thermal aging. A sample that performs well in fresh water may behave differently in KCl or brine systems, so the test environment should match the intended field application.

What Should Buyers Include in an RFQ?

A useful RFQ should include mud type, water chemistry, KCl or brine concentration, expected temperature, formation type, current shale problem, desired polymer function, required quantity, packaging and destination port. If the buyer is replacing an existing PHPA grade, a TDS or COA can help define the comparison target.

الأسئلة الشائعة

1. What is PHPA mainly used for in drilling fluids?

PHPA is mainly used for shale inhibition, cuttings encapsulation, borehole stability and rheological support in water-based drilling mud.

2. Can PHPA be used with KCl?

Yes. PHPA and KCl are commonly evaluated together in inhibitive water-based systems because they provide complementary inhibition mechanisms.

3. Is PHPA the same as APAM used in wastewater treatment?

No. Although both belong to the broader polyacrylamide family, drilling-grade PHPA is selected and tested for drilling-fluid performance, while water-treatment APAM is selected mainly for flocculation and clarification.

4. Does PHPA increase viscosity?

It can influence viscosity and rheology, depending on concentration, salinity, temperature and the rest of the mud formulation.

5. How should a buyer compare two PHPA grades?

Use the same mud formulation and compare hydration, rheology, shale recovery, cuttings integrity, thermal aging and filtration behavior rather than comparing product appearance or price alone.

6. What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the target application, mud composition, salinity, temperature, quantity, packaging and destination port for product information and quotation.
