WBM & OBM Additive Guide
Drilling Fluid Additives
A buyer-oriented guide to shale inhibitors, fluid-loss reducers, viscosifiers, lubricants, emulsifiers, organophilic bentonite and weighting materials.
Drilling fluid additives are used to control rheology, filtration, wellbore stability, cuttings transport, lubrication, emulsion stability and mud density. The correct additive package depends on whether the system is water-based or oil-based, as well as formation type, temperature, salinity, mud weight and operational objectives.
Jinxiang supplies water-based drilling fluid additives and oil-based drilling fluid additives for a broad range of drilling conditions.
1. Viscosifiers and Suspension Additives
When a water-based mud needs stronger low-shear rheology, cuttings carrying or barite suspension, common choices include Gum Xanthan, Karboksimetil Selulosa (CMC) and PAC-HV.
Xanthan gum is especially useful for low-shear suspension and shear-thinning behavior, while PAC and CMC grades can provide different combinations of viscosity and filtration control.
2. Shale Inhibitors
Reactive shale can hydrate, disperse and weaken the wellbore. Additives commonly evaluated include Poliakrilamida Terhidrolisis Sebagian (PHPA), Poliakrilat Kalium (K-PAM), KCl and Sulfonated Asphalt.
PHPA supports cuttings encapsulation, KCl and K-PAM provide potassium-based inhibition, and sulfonated asphalt contributes sealing and wellbore protection.
3. Fluid-Loss Control Additives
For high API or HTHP filtration, buyers may evaluate PAC, Karboksimetil Selulosa (CMC), Pati Termodifikasi, Polymer Fluid-Loss Reducers and SPNH.
The SLB Oilfield Glossary provides a useful industry definition of fluid-loss additives and their role in reducing filtrate invasion.
4. Lubricants
In long horizontal sections, directional wells and high-friction environments, lubricants are used to reduce torque and drag. Buyers should consider compatibility, foaming tendency, thermal stability and possible effects on filtration.
5. Oil-Based Mud Emulsifiers
Oil-based mud requires a stable water-in-oil emulsion. Common products include Pengemulsi Primer, Pengemulsi Sekunder and Pengemulsi Multifungsi.
Selection should consider base oil, oil-water ratio, brine composition, lime, temperature and target electrical stability.
6. Organophilic Bentonite
Bentonit Organofilik is used to build viscosity, gel strength and barite suspension in OBM. For more demanding thermal conditions, a high-temperature grade may be more suitable.
7. Weighting Materials
Barite is widely used to increase drilling-fluid density. Important buying factors include density, particle-size distribution, impurities and the effect of additional solids on rheology and sag risk.
How Buyers Should Match Additives to Problems
| Problem | Additives to Evaluate | Key Test |
|---|---|---|
| Shale hydration | PHPA, K-PAM, KCl, Sulfonated Asphalt | Shale recovery, hot rolling |
| High fluid loss | PAC, CMC, Starch, Polymer Reducer, SPNH | API / HTHP filtration |
| Poor suspension | Xanthan Gum, PAC-HV, CMC-HV | Low-shear rheology, gel strength |
| Weak OBM emulsion | Primary / Secondary Emulsifier | ES, hot rolling, filtration |
| Barite sag | Xanthan Gum / Organophilic Bentonite | Static suspension, gel strength |
Temperature, Salinity and Water Chemistry
Temperature can reduce polymer performance, while salinity and hardness can change hydration and adsorption. Products should be tested under representative conditions rather than only in freshwater at room temperature.
How to Evaluate a Supplier
International buyers should look for a supplier that can provide multiple additive chemistries, clear product identification, TDS, COA and SDS, stable batch quality and practical application support. A supplier should understand the difference between rheology, filtration, inhibition and emulsion functions instead of recommending one generic product for every system.
For industry testing and materials standards, the API Standards program is an important reference framework.
What to Include in an RFQ
Provide the mud type, formation, maximum temperature, salinity, mud density, current rheology, current fluid loss, main drilling problem, existing additives, target performance, required quantity, packaging and destination port.
Why Additive Compatibility Matters
Drilling-fluid additives rarely work alone. A shale inhibitor can change rheology, a fluid-loss reducer can increase viscosity, and an emulsifier package can interact with organophilic clay and lime. This is why compatibility testing is essential before a formulation is scaled up.
For water-based mud, buyers should check how PHPA, KCl, PAC, CMC, xanthan gum and starch behave together. For oil-based mud, the balance between emulsifiers, organophilic bentonite, brine and lime is especially important.
Why Field Conditions Matter More Than Catalog Values
Catalog specifications are useful for screening, but field conditions determine whether an additive will actually work. Temperature, salinity, mud density, drilled solids, contamination and shear history can all change performance.
A good purchasing decision therefore combines technical documents with laboratory testing and field feedback. For repeat orders, batch consistency and reproducibility are just as important as the initial test result.
Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
What are the main types of drilling fluid additives?
Common groups include viscosifiers, shale inhibitors, fluid-loss reducers, lubricants, emulsifiers, organophilic clay and weighting materials.
Are WBM and OBM additives interchangeable?
Generally no, because the continuous phase and chemistry are different.
Which additives are used for shale inhibition?
PHPA, K-PAM, KCl and sulfonated asphalt are common products to evaluate.
Which additives are used for fluid-loss control?
PAC, CMC, modified starch, polymer fluid-loss reducers and SPNH are commonly used.
What controls rheology in OBM?
Organophilic bentonite is commonly used to build viscosity, gel strength and suspension.
